Overview of Spinal Orthotics - Mobility Solution

Our goal is to fit our patients with the type of spinal orthotic devices, or back braces, to best accommodate the wide range of neck or spinal conditions that they may be living with each day.  Spinal orthosis are most often prescribed to limit the motion of, correct deformity in, reduce axial loading on, or improve the function of a particular spinal segment of the body. In order to optimize the impact of a spinal orthosis, a custom-made system is often required for patients who need highly customized spinal orthosis due to conditions including scoliosis, spinal cord injury, spinal fractures or other conditions that cause abnormal curvature of the spine.

Types of Spinal Orthotics

• Cervical Orthosis: Cervical Orthosis (CO) a rigid plastic orthosis that encircles the neck and supports the chin and the back of the head.   Used for treatment of injuries to the cervical spine.
• Lumbosacral Orthosis: Lumbosacral Orthosis (LSO) brace focuses on immobilizing and supporting your lumbar spine. Two types of LSO braces rigid or soft. Rigid braces are used to restrict movement and immobilize, while soft, elastic type braces provide muscular support while still allowing movement.
• Thoracolumbosacral Orthosis: Thoracolumbosacral Orthosis (TLSO) brace focuses on immobilizing and supporting your thoracic and lumbar spine. Two types of TLSO braces rigid or soft. Rigid braces are used to restrict movement and immobilize, while soft, elastic type braces provide muscular support while still allowing movement.
• Scoliosis Orthosis: This type of TLSO is a custom fabricated orthosis that is designed to treat Scoliosis, which is a lateral spinal curvature greater than 10 degrees.  The TLSO is designed to treat the flexible, lateral curves in the spine of a person who has not yet reached skeletal maturity.  The goal of this type of TLSO is to prevent the progression of the scoliotic spinal curve.
